Little Feet, Big Steps

A couple weeks of this...

Led to this!

It's official - Evan took his first step! Ben took these shots of him stringing together some steps last night. The unabridged version of his journey towards walking is below, for those of you who like details.

A couple of weeks ago he fell in love with walking the elmo car around the house (which he still loves to do). Then a week ago, he started to step out from the standing position.  He would immediately fall down, so I didn't feel like we could count it as his "first step" since the step was unsuccessful. But yesterday he put a couple steps together in the morning, and by the evening he was a "walking fool" - well not quite, but he had a run of abut 4-5 steps. I have a feeling he's going to take off in a couple of weeks! Yikes!

Momma says, "I walk real good!"

He's The Whitest Boy I Know...

and he's got the dance to prove it!

He started dancing this week and it is so cute and funny! He goes side-to-side with his knees locked and takes on a "don't mess with me" expression. We've got to get it on video!

Jesse

In a break from the usual for this blog, I (Ben, Amy’s husband) will be writing a post today. I am the middle child of three, I have an older brother (Jesse) and a younger sister (Abigail). Growing up in my family was a lot of fun. Like any family there were definitely ups and downs, but my parents had all of us young and they always seemed to have plenty of energy to do whatever we wanted to do. We travelled, we spent entire days at Six Flags (I mean 10 AM to 11:59 PM), we played bean bag basketball, but most of all we loved each other (sometimes more than others).

When I was in 6th grade my brother was diagnosed with a brain tumor. I don’t remember much of the details of the diagnosis, but let’s just say it was a really bad one that was going to be very hard to beat. Jesse was diagnosed in late November of 1992 and struggled to remain in this life until August 7th, 1993 when he went home to be with the best daddy there has ever been.

I don’t want to go too far off topic, but I need to mention that my parents handled his passing with grace and peace that only God could bring. Now having two children myself, I cannot imagine going thru what they went thru. I’ve never asked them if they cried or questioned God when Abigail and I weren’t around. I should. I only know that they were the perfect models of Christians handling a crisis when we were around. Thank you for that Mom and Dad. It has made an entermal impression on me.

Moving on…

Jesse was born on September 18th 1979 and would be 29 today. I often wonder what he would be like if he were still around and I often mourn that he is not around to share important moments in my life with me. I wonder if Jesse would have gone to A&M like Abigail and I did. I wonder if he would be married or if there is a girl out there that would have been perfect for him that is still waiting for the right guy not realizing that he is long gone. I wonder what pictures taken at my wedding would have looked like with a 24 year old Jesse standing next to me as my best man. I wonder how he would have reacted to seeing his sister’s first child and my first child…

Sometimes life doesn’t seem fair. A lot of times there is no “seems” about, life just isn’t fair. In the earthly sense of the word “fair” my brother dying and not getting to experience life was not fair. In God’s eyes “fair” is a very different thing. God created Jesse, and God had every right to take him in his timing (even if it didn’t seem fair). I don’t want to get too much into the spiritual because I have learned so much from my relationship with Jesse and I only have a limited time to write, so I’ll just say that the entire experience showed me (eventually) what I believed in and made my faith more real to me than I think it ever could have been otherwise. I love my brother, I miss my brother, and I think of him often. I can’t wait to see him in heaven.

Friendships

I have been abundantly blessed to have wonderful friends placed in my life. Some of them are extremely dear to me, especially because of how far back they go.

I met Anna my first Sunday after moving to San Antonio (my 8th grade yr). I still remember what she was wearing --- a wrap-around skirt with colored socks and birkenstock sandals - classy! My outfit was not much better. We both were new to San Antonio, so we bonded immediately over our poor since of fashion... and the fact that we knew nobody else.

I met Michelle a couple of years later. She gets credit for teaching me how and convincing me to use a hair-dryer. Michelle was the party organizer and she kept my social life filled to the brim in high-school.

I met Liz back in Jr. High choir. The choir director told her to go talk to me because I obviously "needed a friend".  Liz thought I was weird, plain and simple, but I won her over! :-) She really helped me come out of my shell and taught me how to have a good time. This girl can laugh in any situation!

The best part of these friendships is that they all encouraged me to pursue the Lord. What a blessing to have growing up! There were other friendships as well that have been extremely influential, but I name these three for a reason.

When Ben and I first moved to San Antonio two years ago all three of these girls were still here, married with new last names, but still my buddies. Anna and Will quickly moved to Cincinnati. Michelle and Frank moved to Austin recently. And Liz and Nate are moving to the D.C. today (which inspired me to write this today)!

Liz, here are some pictures to bring back memories!

And here we are today... wait a minute! AGH!!! I have crow's feet! I'm officially old!

A Princess Party

Elena's friend, Mya Sullivan, had an early birthday party (the Sullivans wanted to get it in before they moved). Whew! That family knows how to throw a party. There was princess themed decorations all throughout the house, a bouncer in the backyard, face painting, balloon animals, and of course a pinata (Elena now thinks a birthday party is not complete without one).

Here are all the princesses lined up.

Wait a minute - we're missing one!
Oh, there we go!

Evan really enjoyed the bouncer.

The mad dash for candy!

She is going to miss her friends!

First Tooth's First Picture

Well Said.

I love the way her thoughts come through in such a creative use of words.

"Uh oh! It's too locked!" (Translation: The door is closed)

"Wow! It's sooo rain!" (Translation: The ground is wet or it is currently raining)

11 Months Old

The scary thing about 11 months, is that it means 12 months is right around the corner. Sniff, sniff.

At 11 Months...

-He prefers to stand holding onto something over sitting on the floor.

-He is sooo patient with Elena's rough-housing.

-He will sit in his high-chair indefinitely as long as there is food on his tray for him to laboriously pick up and put in his mouth.

-He's likes to to "chase" Elena around the house. He does his "speed crawl" with his head down, giggling hysterically, and is oblivious to the fact that Elena laps him multiple times.

-As I mentioned earlier, he is waving, "bye-bye"

-One of his top teeth has come through and it looks like he's about to get the other one.

- He takes a really short nap in the morning, and then goes down for a 3 hour nap between 12 and 1pm.

-He is the best snuggler! When we hold him, he puts his head on our shoulder and his arms kinda wrap around us. Oh, it is the best feeling! Apparently he snuggles with anyone because he did that with a complete stranger for over an hour the other day (pictures to come on that later).

There's Routine, and Then There's ROUTINE

I wanted to share our bedtime routine with Elena. It's not funny in it's own right, but the fact that it happens word for word, night after night, the exact same way cracks me up.

Oh, and by the way, Elena stutters right night now, so I've tried to add the extra syllables in the right places.

So, this takes place right after she's climbed into bed, her water is placed on her left side, and the blanket is pulled up by her neck.

Elena: Mommy*!!! Sing,"Tell Me Why."

---We sing it together.

Elena: Mace-Mace-Mace sings "Tula"

---We sing "Tura-Lura-Lural", a.k.a. "An Irish Lullaby". My dad (Mace) sang it to her first so he always gets referenced in the song request.  Oh, and she sings it as,  "Tula-lula-lula" - so cute!

Elena: Mommy!!! A Kiss!

---A kiss on the cheek

Elena: Mommy!!! One more Kiss!

---Another kiss on the cheek

Elena: Mommy!!! I-I-I go Costco, and Sea World, and-and-and Froggie in da box, and-and-and I see bug!

---You may remember her fetish with Costco and Sea World from when I mentioned them here. The "froggie in da box" is a reference to a frog we saw in a storage box on my Nana's porch this summer in North Carolina. And the, "I see bug" comment is referring to the centipede in the tub. That's the newest line in her script.

Me, as I stand: I love you!

Elena: I lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-love you, Mommy!

Me: Thank you, Elena. I love you too!

Elena: Mommy!!! Put my belly.

---This is the weirdest part. As she says that, she lifts her shirt, holds her belly, and turns to the side. I'm 99% sure she's copying what she's seen from the intro of "Jon and Kate, Plus Eight", where Kate lying in the hospital bed, pregnant with sextuplets, turns to the side holding her enormous belly.

* This changes to "Daddy!" when he puts her down. Really, it's the only thing that changes.

Now This Will Get Me to Post!

Evan waved "bye-bye" last night!

I'm grinning ear to ear writing this because it was so sweet to see! I was feeding Evan some yogurt. Ben came home, and as is the routine, said, "hello" to everyone, then scooped up Elena to go get the mail (it's kinda their thing). Ben just casually said, "Bye, Evan" as he walked to the front door, and then I noticed it! -- Evan's hand opening and closing. I squealed, and told Ben to say, "bye" again. Sure enough, Evan did the same thing.

We tried to recreate the event this afternoon so I could get a picture. Ben's standing behind me waiving. Elena couldn't resist speeding things up by reminding Evan how to do it.

There he goes!

Back to School

Even though no one in this house is attending school, we're still feeling the effects of September being the month where everything starts up again. So, I'm just letting you know that I hope to post more later when things settle down.
